Saturday, July 25, 2009 – LAAS Public Star Party at Griffith Observatory

Every month on Saturday that is closest to the first quarter moon, the Los Angeles Astronomical Society (LAAS), a public outreach partner of Sci-Vi, hosts a “star party” on the front lawn of the Griffith Observatory. Open to the public, club members bring their telescopes to share the wonders of the universe with others. Sci-Vi interns played our animations “The Island Universes” and “The Cepheids” off the laptop for visitors and hosted the viewing of he night sky with one of our 8-inch Dobsonian telescopes. This particular evening we were able to show to the public the Moon and Saturn. In addition we were lucky to saw with the naked eye the International Space Station fly over and explained the event to the visitors.
